Peppermint essential oil is said to be good for ailments such as asthma, colic, fever, flatulence, headache, nausea, chest congestion and dizziness. This oil is said to be excellent for mental fatigue and depression, refreshing and stimulating due to its menthol content. It is good for the skin and is used in lotions to treat sunburn, itching or inflamed skin. In mouthwashes it helps against bad breath and gingivitis. Used in an oil burner, it is not only therapeutic but also keeps mosquitoes and other insects away.
Peppermint originated in the Mediterranean region, but is now also cultivated in other countries in Europe, America and Asia. Discoveries show that peppermint has been used since ancient times in Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and Japan. According to Greek myth, a nymph named Mentha was turned into a mint plant by her lover Persephone's wife in a fit of rage. According to Pliny, peppermint was used by the Greeks and Romans to crown feast days. In England, it has been used as a medicinal plant for several centuries.
